Sony has done it again and this time they beat Apple in introducing a revolutionary technology that might one day set the norm for the mobile device.
Sony Xperia Sola is the first smartphone to feature a touch less capacitive screen. If you remember the news that a French company by the name Noalia was working on a technology that will allow you to control your devices with gestures without touching your device well let’s say they have been really successful.
The same technology is implemented in Xperia Sola which was announced in London at an event held by Sony. Xperia Sola looks like Xperia Arc S but with dumbed down specs.
As Sony mentioned in their event that Sola will come with a touch of magic which refers to floating touch technology which has been trademarked by Sony for their device.
Touch Free Control How Does It Work?
Well not much detail is available regarding the touch free control of the device because the device hasn’t been launched yet in market and Sony has been rather tight lipped about the exact mechanics that make the touch free control work.
Initially it had been thought that there were cameras mounted around the screen that detected the movement of your fingers and accordingly made the phone respond. But the phone isn’t that thick to host multiple cameras around the screen.
But if you are familiar with the technology that Noalia were using to make touch less screens then Sony most probably must have implemented that technology by fitting multiple sensors under the display that detects floating static electricity like our fingers since we are full of static electricity.
Accordingly the screen responds. It’s not sure how much deep integration is there in Android but if you think about the technology the potential for implementing it in various uses would be tremendous.
For one you can use the device with your gloves on in winter and the screen will respond smoothly like the response you would expect from a capacitive display.
In theory you can use the floating touch technology for highlighting various elements and also to obtain different kinds of information. Think Minority Report anyone?
It had been reported that Apple was working on a similar project which they were planning on unveiling with their next product but it seems Sony has beaten them to it.
Expectations From Xperia Sola
Well to be honest looking at the specs Xperia Sola will be just another phone in the xperia lineup that features similar specs that you find in the top Flagship Xperia Arc S.
Other than the touch less screen which makes the phone standout there is nothing special about it.
The phone will be made available in Q2 of 2012 and no word on pricing is available yet.
So do let us know what you think about the phone and how touch less phone would work out for you.
