Google announced that 800,000 websites and apps are actively using its Google Maps API. To celebrate this achievement, Google has released the website called morethanamap.com and its main purpose is to tell you about what a difference the Maps API has had on the internet.
While millions of users simply visit maps.google.com to find where they need to go, many also use Google Maps via other sites. Google wants to thank the developers that use the API by showing visitors to morethanamap.com how Web and app developers influence the Google Maps features.
This site is full of interactive demos to show off how Google makes it easy for anyone to embed the features like Street view, public transit directions, location data and advanced data visualization capabilities.
This site further includes stories from those in the community who are using the API to start businesses, help improve their communities, or save the environment. Google plans to features such stories weekly on the Geo Developers Blog starting on Monday.
Probably no one forgets that Apple’s open letter that apologizes for Apple Maps. Specifically that part says that if people want to use Google maps, they have to use it through the web browser. This is the reason Apple took Google maps out of the app store. People can blame Google all they want to, but all apple has to do to get Google Maps back on iOS is to approve the app in the App store.
