Sony Ericsson Walkman series were one of the most popular music oriented device to be available in the market. They were highly popular among the music enthusiasts until the advent of the touch screen smartphones and hardware race.

With Sony Ericsson W8 they have revived the Walkman series which is sure to make the headline and those music lovers will be glad for the availability of music oriented android device which lets you access the android market and also has storage for thousands of music.

Looks And Feel:

Sony Ericsson W8 is a compact smartphone which is available in three different colors azure, red and orange. The black panel is matt plastic finish to give a glossy appearance but the glossy surface results in a smudge prone surface.

W8 comes with a 3inch HVGA screen on which the images look very crisp and the UI is properly thumb optimized letting you navigate around very easily and effortlessly in the small 3inch screen.

The screen is TFT unit with good brightness and contrast levels. The disadvantage of the screen is that it has very poor sunlight legibility making it difficult to use in bright sunny days.

Below the screen you will find three hardware buttons that can also be found in the flagship device Xperia Arc S. the buttons are large and nicely spaced so pressing them isn’t difficult with good response. The right side of the phone features the volume rocker buttons and a dedicated camera button.

Above the display you will notice a notification LED light and also the ambient light sensor. If you move to the top you will notice the power/lock screen key which is nicely designed and not protruding much outside so accidental press isn’t possible.

The back of the phone features a 3MP camera lens along with loudspeaker.

The device is very comfortable to hold and the curved rear makes it very secure to hold. The device is made completely out of plastic which helps to keep the weight down and also makes the device very durable.

Hardware And Performance:

Although it’s a Walkman series droid the phone comes with Android 2.1 Éclair preinstalled which is a big disappointment. Although Gingerbread is becoming the mainstay android OS these days and with the release of Android 4.0 ICS Sony Ericsson have no plans of upgrading this device to the latest android OS.

Although having android 2.1 is disappointing Sony Ericsson have made sure to customize it in such a way that is easy and very comfortable to use despite the small screen size of the device. There are four thumb able shortcuts on each corner of the screen which you customize to add any shortcuts you like.

You can have as many home screens you want but you are limited to one widget per screen. The widgets and home screens are very easy to rearrange and the rest of the setup is similar to the usual android experience.

Sony Ericsson W8 is powered by 600Mhz ARM 11 processor and Adreno 200 graphics chips. Granted it’s not the most powerful processor but with the current and available hardware it performs very splendidly. There is no lag or any slow down during the usage of the device.

Since this is a music oriented device we will take a look at the music player of the device. The audio player is able to manage your audio files very efficiently and has received a new facelift which shows you that it is a Walkman device rather than an Xperia device.

The audio quality of the device is excellent. When you are using the loudspeaker it gives you good loudness without sacrificing any audio quality. You will get an impressive audio quality when you connect the headphones. Since the device comes with a 3.5mm jack you can connect any headphone of your choice and you will be impressed with the audio quality of the device.

Verdict:

W8 is an entry level device so if you are looking for performance then this is the wrong place to look in. It’s a low end smartphone with an outdated android OS although Sony Ericsson could have done better.

The audio quality is impressive and the phone lives up to the name of Walkman.

So if you are looking for a cheap smartphone with good audio quality then this is the device for you.
